Discovery Engine – StumbleUpon

A fantastic way of discovering what’s out there on the big ol’ www…

StumbleUpon is something I have just recently discovered. Perhaps many of you have already used it, but for those of you who haven’t, I recommend giving it a try!
Joining the StumbleUpon service is free and all you have to do is set up a profile by providing minimal information. It’s quite easy!

Even using the service is really simple. StumbleUpon covers a huge variety of topics, from photography to animals, family, humour, travel and so much more. The list is endless. This discovery search engine recommends content from the web by using a list of interests provided by the user. And all you have to do is type in your interest and click on “Stumble” to start discovering.

I found some wonderful things on many of my interests, including language and writing. :-D All I had to do was type in writing and voilà, a world of discovery awaited me.

StumbleUpon is very interesting, not only the service that it provides, but the idea behind it is also quite fascinating. I wanted to find out more about how this service worked, so I did some research.

StumbleUpon is what Wikipedia labels a “discovery engine” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StumbleUpon. This seems quite straightforward, but it is a term that I haven’t really come across until now. I’m sitting here thinking to myself: where have I been? I thought search engines were search engines and that’s it. But, clearly not. ;-) There is so much more to learn.

I really think that the concept of StumbleUpon is great! It gives a whole new meaning to the searching and discovering of the web.

StumbleUpon was founded by a group of individuals in Canada in 2001. (Wow! 8-o Really, I repeat, where have I been? :-P) This service has been around for 11 years and is still going strong!

My only regret is not having found this wonderful way of uncovering what is on the web sooner. Not to worry though, I am definitely making up for lost time! I could spend hours stumbling onto the various astonishing websites and web content that I would never have found on my own otherwise.

You’ll just have to check it out for yourself! Have fun stumbling into a new dimension of searching the web! 8-)
